The Project
The Early Childhood Learning and Assessment Exemplar project was developed as a pilot project in association with the Ministry of Education National Exemplar project in schools. For early childhood, exemplars are samples of assessments of children's learning. They may include teacher observations, learning stories, transcripts, children's work and adults' or children's comments.
The framework for the development of the exemplars emerged from the philosophy of Te Wh膩riki. The four principles of Te Whariki are also principles for assessment, and they provided the framework for Kei Tua o te Pae/Assessment for Learning: Early Childhood Exemplars. The exemplars strongly reflect the principles of Te Wh膩riki and socio-cultural approaches to learning and teaching. The core framework of noticing, recognising, and responding is at the heart of effective assessment and quality teaching practice.
The Resource
Kei Tua o te Pae/Assessment for Learning: Early Childhood Exemplars is a best practice resource that will help teachers continue to improve the quality of their teaching. The exemplars consist of a series of books that will help teachers to understand and strengthen children鈥檚 learning and show how children, parents and wh膩nau can contribute to this assessment and ongoing learning.
